WBON-TV9 has learned more details concerning an arrest last Thursday in Downtown Richmond.
Richmond Police say they observed 51-year-old Haskell Varney of Lancaster, who had several outstanding warrants for his arrest. Varney was spotted at the Sparks Medical Center on East Main St. in Richmond.
When an officer tried to approach Varney, he states Varney pulled a knife. The officer then pulled his handgun. According to the citation, after numerous commands to drop the knife, Varney did, and took off running. A foot chase continued to Millstone Park, where the officer says Varney stopped, and continued his aggressive posture. According to the officer, he gave Varney several more commands to get on the ground before tasing him a couple of times.
Varney is now facing additional charges of menacing, fleeing, resisting arrest, and possession of methamphetamine.
He is lodged in the Madison County Detention Center.
