The Kentucky State Police, London Post, is conducting a death investigation following an alleged overdose of a Clay County man while in custody.
Investigators say Shawn D. Gibson, 49 years old of Oneida, was arrested in connection to an active warrant during a traffic stop on North Highway 66 and placed in the rear seat of a KSP patrol vehicle. While troopers were continuing their investigation of the traffic stop, Gibson allegedly consumed illicit drugs, resulting in him overdosing.
Lifesaving measures were attempted, and Gibson was transported by Clay County EMS to Advent Health in Manchester, where he was pronounced deceased by the Clay County Coroner. An autopsy was performed this morning at the State Medical Examiner’s Office and a toxicology report is pending.
The ongoing investigation is being conducted by Lieutenant Tye Chavies. He was assisted at the scene by KSP Post 11 personnel, Clay County EMS and the Clay County Coroner’s Office.
