New statistics released by the U.S. Department of Labor claim that Kentucky has seen a decrease in unemployment claims last week, down over 22,000 claims from two weeks ago. According to the new numbers, 47,036 Kentuckians filed for unemployment insurance benefits last week.
This mirrors the national unemployment claim numbers as last week saw 182,265 less claims than the week prior.
Although this is a slightly positive trend, Kentucky is still considered to be one of the states most affected by recent unemployment claims due to COVID-19. In a recent study conducted by WalletHub, Kentucky ranks 8th in the nation when it comes to last week’s increased unemployment claims numbers.

However, the Commonwealth ranks 3rd overall in the nation when looking at claims filed since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis. The same study claims that Kentucky has seen a 1970.25% increase in unemployment claims from May 2019. This particular number refers to the increase in the number of unemployment insurance initial claims in the week of May 11, 2020 compared to the week of May 13, 2019.
