Kentucky Farmers Provide Healthy Meals to Kids in Need

The hot weather wasn’t stopping Kentucky Kids Eat from providing healthy meals to food-insecure children.

Buses across the state make stops to provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner to children.

Much of the food is supplied by Kentucky farmers. Commissioner of Agriculture Ryan Quarles said the program to connect Kentucky Kids Eat and Kentucky farmers was started two years ago to create a new market for farmers across the Commonwealth while also providing children healthy meals.

Quarles said a grant is being used to provide a small incentive to school systems and meal programs to choose Kentucky grown food. It was reported that incentive has been successful with a growth in farmers participating, and that two thousand Kentucky feeding sites have chosen to use Kentucky raised food.
