In Tuesday’s fiscal court meeting, newly instituted Jailer Steve Tussey reported that the jail is still over capacity, at over 400 inmates as of presstime. The detention center was designed to only hold 184 inmates. Tussey said in his report that this comes in at about 70 inmates per correctional officer. He invited all those to come and look at the jail to see how serious the overcrowding issue is.
Tussey says he has plans to remedy this problem, but in the short-term they have no choice but to ship inmates to other facilities as has been the practice in recent years. He reiterated to the Fiscal Court that there is no room to house even one more inmate without moving another elsewhere as they are sleeping basically on top of one another.
