Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 8 Morehead was contacted by Powell County Dispatch around 2:20 p.m. requesting assistance with a fatal traffic collision involving an ATV.
Preliminary investigation indicates that 32-year-old Shawn Cornett and 29-year-old passenger Ashley Plowman, both of Irvine, were operating an ATV on the roadway around the 7800 block of Hardwicks Creek Road. Cornett lost control of the ATV causing it to overturn. Cornett was transported to Clark Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Upon arriving at the hospital Cornett reportedly left against medical advice. Plowman was pronounced deceased at the scene by Powell County Coroner.
As a result of the investigation KSP was able to locate Cornett at his residence. He was arrested and charged with Reckless Homicide, All Terrain Vehicle violations and No Operator’s License. Cornett was lodged in the Powell County Detention Center.
KSP was assisted on scene by Powell County Sheriff’s Department, Powell County EMS, Clay City Fire Department and Powell County Coroner. This case remains under investigation.
