The WBON-TV crew recently traveled to Richmond’s only local museum to learn more about the history of the storied structure.
The Irvinton House located next to Irvine McDowell Park has seen many residents throughout the course of its life. The most notable occupants of the home, were members of the Irvine family who lived there for nearly 100 years from the early 1800’s to 1920.
The looming house’s many rooms and chambers hold relics from a time long since past. The current caretakers of the house are very cautious of the various heirlooms… just to be on the safe side.
After the death of the last remaining Irvine family member who lived there, the house was given to the Kentucky Medical Center, who subsequently converted the house into a hospital. In 1950, the hospital ceased operation after nearly 30 years, leaving the grounds to become Richmond’s first park (Irvine McDowell Park).
The Irvinton House currently functions as office space for Richmond’s Parks and Recreation Department, and is available for tours open to the public.
