Homecoming in a small town

R. David Shew

Took my mother to a funeral visitation for her neighbor, Eddie Pullins, today, and the caretaker of the local establishment asked me if I would drive his son and a young lady in the Madison Central Homecoming parade. Terrell Cobb apologized for his late notice and told me that he did not think that his son and the young lady could fit in his father’s Mazda Maida.

For me, it was truly an honor to be asked to do this. Terrell and I go back to when my family moved to Richmond. Terrell’s mother and father, Cecilia and Ewell Cobb, were some of my parents’ best friends and mine too. His parents even let me house sit for them when they went on a family vacation and left their brand-new Camaro for me to drive. Believe me, that is something I will never forget. To say that they were trusting is an understatement.

So today at 5 p.m. I picked up Terrell at his house and drove out to Madison Central and met his wife, Sally, and his son, Logan Cobb, and his friend, Rose Snell. Rose’s grandmother, Anna Land, was there to say hello and make sure her granddaughter was in good hands. Thankfully, Terrell was riding shotgun.

Terrell and I pulled into our assigned parking spot, #7, and we waited for the parade to begin. Finally, our trip down Second Street behind the Madison Central ladies wrestling team got the show on the road. These young ladies were fun to watch distributing candy to the young children. Personally, I am happy to say everyone survived and a lot of children enjoyed their sugar rush.

It was a beautiful night to say the least. Main Street was lined with families and friends, and everyone seemed to enjoy the parade. From my seat, I must say that it made my day to drive Logan and Rose in the Homecoming parade and took me back to my younger years of watching Friday night football and the marching bands.

Yes, I must say “thank you” to Terrell Cobb and best of luck to all the candidates in the Homecoming court. Cheers to Logan and Rose! I’m pulling for these two.

The day ended with running into a few old friends at dinner and sharing stories with several new associates. It truly is special to live in a small town and enjoy watching it come to life over something like a Homecoming parade.
