Emily LaDouceur, the Berea City councilor that was body shamed for giving a tour to elementary students while wearing leggings has found support from the citizens of her city that she says she could have never imagined. LaDouceur was pinpointed on Facebook not for the tour, but for what she was wearing.
The posts and scathing remarks regarding her clothing and size have garnered her national attention, which LaDouceur has taken in stride.
WBONtv sat down with the local councilwoman, and got her perspective on the fallout from the post, but more importantly the overwhelming support that came about from the remarks. She elaborates on the way the city and local businesses have come together to support her in her choice of clothing, but more critically, she says, on the issues she brings to the table at each Berea City Council meeting.
LaDouceur continues in the interview, saying that she never thought in a million years she’d be in such a situation, but it has sparked a dialogue that needs to be brought to the forefront on a national and international scale.
We also spoke with owner of Native Bagel Company Katie Startzman, who was just one of a handful of local businesses that participated in the support of the councilor, and says she did so because it was something close to her heart, especially considering her staff is nearly all women
Citizen support has been overwhelming according to the ladies and during last week’s city council meeting many citizens showed up wearing leggings as a display of support. However, this was just a small fraction of those that wore leggings in solidarity for the first ever #bereawearsleggingsday as LaDouceur says she witnessed support online from both men and women that day nationwide.
