Fleming County Pipeline Explosion Under Investigation

Last night around 4:30, WBONtv received reports of a gas line explosion in Fleming County.

Residents reported a huge plume of smoke visible from everywhere in the County and surrounding areas. Preliminary reports say the incident is in the area of Watson Road, County Road 1013. This is the same area another gas explosion happened in the 1980’s near the Hillsboro community.

The gas line is owned by Enbridge, the same company that had another line explosion in August of last year in Lincoln County.

The family of the woman that was killed in last summer’s incident filed a lawsuit against Enbridge.

The early morning blast on August 1st leveled numerous mobile homes near the Moreland community, killing 58-year-old Lisa Derringer. That incident also saw six people hospitalized for burns and 75 were evacuated from their homes following the explosion, which ejected 30 feet of piping from the earth and left a 26,000-cubic-foot crater in the area around six miles south of Danville.

The pipeline encompasses more than 9,000 miles and stretches from the Mexican border in Texas to New York through Kentucky, and has come under scrutiny before for its aging condition.

Last night’s incident in Fleming County is currently under investigation by the EPA, as to the exact cause.
