Federal Unemployment Benefit to End Next Week for Kentuckians

Those who have been unfortunate enough to lose employment due to the ongoing pandemic, have at least been able to see an added bonus to their unemployment insurance benefits in the form of the $600 weekly federal unemployment benefit. However, those benefits will soon be ending, and for some states, sooner than some may think.

Even though the federal government benefits are officially slated to be phased out by July 31st, most states will reportedly only be supplying the extra income through the week ending on July 25th.

“The Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) $600 can be paid for weeks ending no later than the week ending prior to Friday, July 31, 2020,” according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Labor. “For all states except (New York), that is Saturday, July 25th. New York’s end date is Sunday, July 26th.”

In an article written on the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce website, it was reported that the last week Kentuckians can expect to receive the $600 is the week of July 19-25. The CARES Act allows for the extra benefits to be dispersed through the date of July 31st or the final benefit week as determined by each state. As Kentucky’s benefit weeks end on Saturday, the last full benefit week prior to July 31st is considered to be July 19-25.

In the same article, Kentucky Chamber President and CEO Ashli Watts is quoted as saying the following:

“With these benefits ending, it is imperative that Kentucky continues its progress reopening our economy and getting our people back to work. The only way we can achieve this is by practicing social distancing, wearing masks, and continuing to do our part to limit the spread of this disease. The Kentucky Chamber is committed to helping our business community stay safe and stay open.”
