Estill County School Superintendent Jeff Saylor took time out of his busy first day of school to speak with WBON-TV’s Marisa Hempel.
He not only said that the 2017-2018 school year began with a great day today, but that they had just decided to follow suit with other counties to forgo school on August 21st, the day of the solar eclipse. Saylor explained that because the eclipse will peak at pick up times for children, it is also a safety precaution to let students stay home that day as well as to let them enjoy the once in a lifetime astronomical event.
Also discussed was the re callable nickel tax, which had been voted on at last week’s school board meeting. Saylor said that the election almost did not go through because of the number of votes, but now the nickel tax will finally be moving forward.
Saylor also discussed the allegations that were made against him and the school board, and dismissed the contention, saying that the focus needs to be on the students. Some of the allegations brought against Saylor involved gift giving in order to win votes, and under the table deals.
