An Estill County School resource officer’s future remains uncertain following an arrest on September 28 for a DUI charge.
The resource officer, 45 year-old Delmer Cole, was arrested after police allegedly observed him driving recklessly on a Garrard County street. During this incident, Cole was allegedly crossing several traffic lines. This prompted officials to perform a traffic stop.
According to the citation, police detected the odor of alcohol coming from Cole’s vehicle and observed an opened pint of vodka in the vehicle next to him. Cole reportedly failed a sobriety test, as he was unable to walk in a straight line without falling over, according to the arresting officer. When tested, he registered a .283 blood alcohol content level.
Cole had just returned as the resource officer for Estill County Schools for the second year, where he primarily worked at Estill County’s middle and high school.
The Estill County School Board has been aware of the situation since Tuesday and they are following due process for the school board, according to a statement Superintendent Jeff Saylor made to WBON-TV.
Cole was released from the Lincoln County Jail on September 29 after signing himself out on an unsecured bond. Cole’s court date in Garrard County has been set for October 14.
