Sheriff Mike Coyle says the Sheriff’s office has accomplished quite a bit in the years since he was appointed and then ran for county sheriff. He is running again on the Democrat ticket, and wants to continue the momentum he says the department has started.
One of the biggest highlights he says is the accreditation, which only 17 counties statewide have been granted. Coyle was also named as Kentucky Sheriff of the Year in 2017, which he says was a huge honor that he can only credit to his employees and deputies, who nominated him for the prestigious statewide award.
Coyle mentioned school safety as a number one priority, as the threats of shootings at schools have hit close to home here in Madison County. Sheriff Coyle says he will continue to work with the Madison County School Board to make sure the schools are as safe as possible.
Coyle also told Marisa Hempel that the jail overcrowding puts strain on the sheriff’s office as well, as they have to ship the prisoners to the other jails across Central Kentucky. He praised the fiscal court however, and said that he would work with the county offices as well as the jailer to ease the chronically overcrowded detention center.
The drug epidemic was touched on, as well as the High Intensity Drug Task Force that Coyle helped put together, which seeks to take down dealers at the high and mid level.
