Lifelong Madison county resident and former Richmond police officer Everett king is running on the republican ticket for Madison County Jailer. King says after he retired from the force after an injury, he finished his Bachelor’s in Business from Eastern Kentucky University.
King explained his platform, including his ideas for a 1000 bed new detention center, which would remedy the overcrowding issue and pay for itself by bringing in inmates from nearby jails.
King says that in his experience, the 800 bed facility that is currently proposed would not generate enough profit. He also added that building a jail before a treatment center would be more feasible as the overcrowding issue is only worsening. Having the SAP program inside the jail would also be safer than transporting to another facility according to King.
He adds that the reason the current Detention center is not hosting the Substance Abuse Program offered by the state is because those wishing to enroll in SAP have to be separated from the rest of the population, and there is currently no way to achieve this.
