Eastern Kentucky Women basketball sit at 8th place in OVC play with the top eight teams making the league tournament. EKU is 4-8 tied with Murray St at 4-8 and a game ahead of Tennessee State at 3-9. Tennessee Tech is 2-10. They host UT Martin tonight and Martin sits 8-4 in OVC play, they played once and lost at Martin by 28. Former Lady Indian Ashton Feldhaus returns home one last time as a Lady Skyhawk.
The first quarter saw the teams trade baskets with Shay Solomon scoring Eastern’s first four points. A 7-0 run by UT Martin turned into a 17-4 run to end the first quarter and they led by 12 after one, 20-8. Eastern shot just 3-14 with 8 turnovers in the frame. Second quarter Skyhawks pushed the lead out to 16 at 24-8 until Abby Wright knocked in a basket. A three pointer from Ashton Feldhaus made it a 19 point lead but back to back three’s from Wight and Bria Bass gave the lady Colonels hope but 5-2 run to end the half by Martin and they led 39-20. Eastern shot 8-28 21% and committed 14 turnovers. The Skyhawks used a 2-2-1 3/4 trap and a 2-1-2 half court trap to disrupt the offense of EKU. EKU was led by Abby Wright and her 7 points and 6 rebounds. Former Lady Indian Ashton Feldhaus had 6 points on two three pointers in the half.
The second half saw the Lady Colonels go on an 11-2 run to start the half and cut the lead to 10 at 41-31. Abby Wright had two three pointers in that spurt. A couple of three’s by Martin and the lead was back out to 14 points. Abby tried to keep the Colonels in it scoring 14 points in the third quarter but after three Martin led 56-43. The fourth quarter saw UT Martin pull away outscoring EKU 16-11 and holding on for a 72-54 win. Abby Wright with 24 points and just missed a double double with 9 rebounds. Bria Bass with a double double 13 points and 10 rebounds, Shay Solomon 8 points, A’Queen Hayes 4 points, Terri Goodlet with 3 points, and Kenyia Johnson adds 2 points. The Skyhawks placed five players in double figure scoring led by Spray Kendall 19 points (5-13 three pointers), Feldhaus finished with 13 points on 4-8 shooting, 3-5 behind the arc, she knocked down both her free throw attempts, 3 rebounds, 3 assists.
