Have you ever heard the expression “If you don’t like the Kentucky weather, just wait a few minutes and it will change” or something like that. Yes, besides a little rain, the patrons at The Vine last night were treated to a very entertaining show last night at The Vine.
Hunter Spivey, a local favorite from Rockcastle County, opened the show for Eddie and Walker Montgomery. It is always great to be exposed to another local artist at The Vine. Next, Walker Montgomery took the stage after a wonderful introduction from DeAnn Stephens who has known Walker since he was born.
For the record ladies, Walker is getting married this month and sorry about your luck. Several years ago, this writer was lucky enough to meet Walker and learned that Walker is a proud Sigma Chi from his short time at the University of Kentucky.
Walker’s current tour is called “Saving the Honky Tonks” and from my viewpoint he is doing an excellent job carrying on the Montgomery tradition singing several originals and several songs that his father, John Michael Montgomery, made famous.
Next up was Montgomery Gentry featuring Eddie Montgomery and The Wild Bunch. Eddie sang several of hits including Something to Be Proud Of (#1), What Do Ya Think About That, Where I Come From, Lucky Man (#1), She Couldn’t Change Me, My Town, Hell Yeah, and Gone. Members of The Wild Bunch are singing T-Roy’s parts in the old favorites of Montgomery Gentry. Eddie and The Wild Bunch came back and sang another special Hillbilly Shoes which happens to be my new nickname.
Finally, this writer has been fortunate enough to see John Michael Montgormery perform in concert as well as have played 18 holes of golf with him and fraternity brother Tony Merida. Also, I have been to Nashville when Eddie played the Grand Ole Opry and introduced Alex Miller. And now I can say that I have completed the trifecta having seen Walker at The Vine.
The Montgomery family, including ole T-Roy, has contributed mightily to the Kentucky music scene for several decades. Oh yeah, Eddie’s boots stole the show!
