A fire was reported today at Grand campus at Eastern Kentucky university. Crews responded when the call came in that smoke was coming out of one the student apartment buildings. The cause was due to an electrical box, and as there was no damage, all residents were moved back in within an hour.
Richmond fire department also responded late Saturday night to a blaze located behind city hall in downtown Richmond to a building that was a church, but had been converted into office space and two residential units. RPD says this fire required a methodical effort to get it under control.
Reports from the scene state the building was vacant as crews worked to put out the flames.
Corey Lewis of the Richmond fire department explained that they had a hard time fighting the blaze because of the nature of the building, as the age of the old church made for multiple false roofs and walls that firefighters had to tear down methodically.
Lewis says there is no word yet as to the exact cause of the fire, but it started in the first unit and began in the living room of the building. All residents were put in hotel rooms by the American red cross as the units are now unlivable. He says it was fortunate that there was no fire spread as because it was downtown all buildings were very close, and nearby ones had to be evacuated as well.
