The destruction of chemical weapons currently housed at the Blue Grass Army Depot was announced yesterday to be on schedule, with a start to the long-planned project in 2019. The stockpile, according to officials at the quarterly meeting yesterday on EKU’s campus, reported that by the last day of 2023 the chemical agents will be destroyed.
The Kentucky Chemical Demilitarization Citizens’ Advisory Commission and Chemical Destruction Community Advisory Board also reported on employment at the destruction plant, in which there are still 400 positions open. The goal was to keep a large portion of the hires local, to help the local economies of Richmond and Madison County. According to the project Manager Ron Hink, nearly 1,300 people have gained employment, and they are still looking.
