A tragic accident today on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University has resulted in the death of a man.
The accident happened a little after 8 a.m. Tuesday morning. The 61-year-old male victim, whose name has yet to be released pending family notifications, was doing work on campus as an outside contractor.
The man was reportedly using a cutting torch in the basement of Telford Hall on some heavy equipment. The equipment was HVAC related and was scheduled to be removed and replaced. The equipment reportedly unexpectedly fell on the man, resulting in his death.
EKU released this statement to WBON-TV9:
“We are saddened to confirm that a contractor performing work on our Richmond campus was involved in a fatal incident today. Our thoughts are with the individual’s family, friends and colleagues. Out of respect for the family and the ongoing investigation into the cause of death, we will not have additional comment.”
Eastern Kentucky University Police are heading up the investigation.
