Concerned Citizens of Estill County Meet To Discuss Radioactive Waste

Today in Irvine, the Concerned Citizens of Estill County met to discuss action moving forward regarding the radioactive waste that had been illegally dumped at the Blue Ridge landfill in 2015.

WBON TV Spoke to attorney Mary Cromer with the Appalachian Citizens Law Center out of Whitesburg who represent The Concerned Citizens of Estill County.

Cromer updated us on the situation, and reiterated that no criminal charges have been filed following the incident, and that the parties who were deemed responsible in civil court have declared bankruptcy.

She told us what the purpose of the meeting is today, and said that the Cabinet for Health and Family Services gave updates at the meeting as well.

Cromer said the corrective action will take some time, and that removing the actual radioactive material may not be the best option, as unearthing it could pose a risk to workers and the nearby schools. More research is needed to be done in order to understand what the best method is moving forward.
