Colonel Baseball wins home opener
_____
EKU baseball opened their home season on a wet and chilly afternoon but a good crowd filed into Earle Combs Stadium where the Colonels open their second season of play in. Colonels were 16-11 at home last season. This season the Colonels are 1-6 but their lone win came at #15 Virginia back on February 23. The Maroons have lost three games by one run and another by 2. They’ve been in games just can’t find a way to finish them so far. This years team was picked to finish last in the conference after losing All American and former Madison Central Indian Ben Fischer. Fischer was drafted in the 21st round last year by the Miami Marlins. The Colonels do return Junior Alex Holderbach, a preseason all Ohio Valley conference team member, and six starters and six pitchers from last years team. Daniel Harris IV was ranked as the number one freshman entering the season. As a senior last season he hit .492 with two home runs. Eddie Satisky was ranked as the 11th best freshman, he comes from Lafayette where he helped the Generals win back to back district titles.  Head Coach Edwin Thompson enter his third season as Colonel head man. He has a 48-63 record at EKU. Last season the Colonels were 24-32, 20-11 at home.
_______
Logan Teague, a junior, gets his first start of the season. He’s allowed 6 runs on the season in 7 2/3 innings of work. He has 7 strikeouts on the season. Teague pitches a perfect top of half on the first and the Colonels are able to get on the board with an RBI ground out by Tyler Romanik. In the third Logan Stephens scores on a double steal thanks in part to an error. After two Colonels on top 2-0. Home part of the third saw Catcher Alex Holderback go yard for the first time this season as he jacks a 3 run homer to put Eastern up 5-0. Next half inning Will Johnson hits another 3 run homer, also his first of the season, and the Colonels are rolling 8-0. Teague is pulled after 5 strong innings of work, his final line was 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks and he struck out 3. EKU scores again in the bottom of the eighth after a double from Johnson and wild pitch moved him to third, he scores on a ground out by Nick Howie.
_______
