It is expected that approximately 1,400 athletes from across the Commonwealth will be displaying their athleticism at the 2025 Special Olympics Kentucky State Summer Games this weekend. Special Olympics athletes will have the opportunity to take home the gold in four sports including gymnastics and track & field. This will mark the 30th anniversary of Eastern Kentucky University hosting the state Summer Games, and the City of Richmond has planned a special pre-games mini parade to recognize this important milestone. Public Information Officer for the City of Richmond Kelley McBride says she hopes to see community partners and residents take part in the parade to show their support for the athletes.
The Opening Ceremonies for the Games will begin at 6pm on Friday near the center of campus, before the competitions get under way. The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports and training in athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for adults and children with intellectual disabilities. Local Coordinator for Madison County Special Olympics Jaime Moore tells WBON that seeing the heart and determination the athletes display during the Games is as rewarding as it is exciting.
Currently, Special Olympics officials are monitoring the weather and will make “game time” decisions regarding the venues that athletes will compete in, if necessary.
