For decades, Madison County and its surrounding communities have lived within miles of some of the deadliest chemical munitions ever created.
Today Madison County celebrated a milestone and historical event. The very last chemical weapon in the country was destroyed in July 2023 right here at the Bluegrass Army Depot in Madison County.
The destruction of these munitions not only marks the elimination of all chemical weapons at the Blue Grass Army Depot, but the destruction of all chemical weapons in the U.S. stockpile.
This achievement, that will be noted in history, was celebrated today with a ceremony at the Bluegrass Army Depot ‘s National Guard facility off of 421.
It was an official ceremony with National, State, local representatives, including Governor Andy Beshear, members of the BGCAPP workforce, and the community. Most who have all contributed to this remarkable achievement in making Madison County, and the region a much safer place.
The ceremony began with a presentation of colors from the Eastern Kentucky, University, ROTC, and the national anthem by the Madison Central High School Choir.
U.S. Republican Senate Leader and keynote speaker Mitch McConnell, who is credited to bringing billions to the County and the Depot, said the United States was part of a treaty with the world to eliminate all chemical weapons by the end of 2023.
Today in Madison County, the United States made good on that promise, and made it official. The world and where we live have been forever changed.
