As the holiday season winds down officials with Kentucky Fish and Wildlife are asking people to donate their natural (real) Christmas trees to use for fish habitats again this year. It’s the annual “Christmas with the fishes” program. Make sure your trees are ornament and decoration free before bringing.
The program begins today and runs until January 15th.
You can drop off your trees in Madison County at the lake Reba recreational complex. That’s in soccer complex B the big parking lot right across from the boat ramp parking. For information on drop offs contact Tom Timmerman 606-783-8650.
There are several drop-off sites across the state for people to donate their natural Christmas trees.
These trees are submerged in lakes and reservoirs where fish can use them as shelter. Donated trees will be anchored to environmentally-friendly weights and submerged at various depths in different lakes and reservoirs across Kentucky to provide places for fish to feed, shelter and spawn. They make great refuge and feeding habitat for game fish, as well as small fish and invertebrates that are crucial for a thriving ecosystem.
Fish flourish in an environment that is full of different types of cover including trees and logs. The donated trees will help restore woody structures in lakes that decay over time, providing protective cover and shade for a variety of fish species.
