The program at the Rotary Club of Richmond was “stitched with love” this week. Sara Sringfield, the Director of Community Health and Engagement at Baptist Health Richmond, was the program chair, and Sara invited the Baptist Health quilters to share their quilting skills with the members of the Rotary Club of Richmond.
This group of quilters explained how they come together and make beautiful quilts for the new patients receiving treatment for cancer at the Robert L. Telford Cancer Center at Baptist Health Richmond. The program was very educational with the women explaining how they start with samples of materials, sew them together in a pattern, then sew the pieces together to make the front of the quilt, add the inside to the backing, and then sew all this together. Please excuse the simplicity of this writer’s explanation of making a quilt.
Several examples along the way were presented to the club members and were gorgeous to say the least. The example of a quilt finalized was exquisite to say the least.
One story told at the meeting was when a young man, who was not happy with his cancer diagnosis and was being quite distant with the nurse, finally was invited to pick out a quilt. At this time, the young patient’s attitude completely changed when he realized that the group of quilters who did not know him wanted to share a quilt with him. This showed the love this group has for others who are experiencing the difficulty of dealing with cancer.
The Baptist Health quilting group receives support from Paint The Town Pink. This year, the 17th annual Paint The Town Pink Kickoff Celebration will be held Friday, September 26 at 10:30 a.m. at the Madison County Courthouse.
