Today AppHarvest officially opened it’s 15 acre, high tech indoor salad greens farm in Berea.
At 15 acres, or nearly 654,000 ft.², the AppHarvest Berea farm is expected to be the world’s largest hi-tech indoor farm for autonomously harvested salad greens with a cutting edge touchless growing system.
The AppHarvest Berea facility was proclaimed officially open this afternoon as Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, US Representative Andy Barr, and AppHarvest founder and CEO Jonathan Webb used handheld harvesters to cut down a strip of crispy and juicy greens grown in the farms touchless system.
The farm is designed to grow about 35 million lettuce plants at a time which go from seed to maturity in only 3 to 4 weeks, depending on variety.
AppHarvest says they also plan to start planting on their 60 acre Richmond tomato farm in November located on Speedwell Road.
