The Richmond community will once again come together to honor the life and legacy of Dustin Short, a lifelong martial artist whose impact continues to inspire athletes and families throughout the region.
Dustin began training in martial arts at just 8 years old under the guidance of Coach Scott Elliott of the AFS Academy of Martial Arts and remained deeply connected to the sport throughout his life. He grew up on the mats, eventually competing as both an amateur and professional fighter. His resilience and love for the sport left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Dustin passed away unexpectedly at the age of 30, but his influence continues through the athletes he inspired.
The Dustin Short Memorial Benefit Run is organized each year on Dustin’s birthday by cousin, Tyler Black, owner of Endure Mindset. Black, who describes Dustin as “more of a brother than a cousin,” created the event to honor Dustin’s memory while giving back to young athletes pursuing their own goals. This year will be Dustins 33rd birthday.
In addition to organizing the memorial run, Black recently expanded his commitment to youth development by opening a gym focused on supporting young softball athletes, emphasizing mental toughness, confidence, and long-term athletic growth.
In conjunction with the benefit run, the Dustin Short Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student who demonstrates commitment, character, and perseverance. Continuing the tradition of community support, AFS Academy of Martial Arts / 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu Richmond matches the scholarship with one of its own, doubling the impact and extending Dustin’s legacy to the next generation.
Community members are encouraged to donate to the scholarship fund and nominate students who embody the heart that Dustin exemplified throughout his life.
“Dustin grew up on these mats,” organizers shared. “This scholarship ensures his story continues through young athletes who are building their own paths with the same determination.”
