Alleged Camper Burglar in Richmond Arrested

A recent burglary incident lead to the arrest of a Richmond man.

An anonymous complaint was received stating that a male had walked across the road to the amusement park that is closed down on North Keeneland Drive. The complainant stated that the male jumped over the fence surrounding the amusement park.

Officers arrived at the scene and observed a vehicle parked near the area. A female subject was found in the passenger seat of the vehicle.

The female subject stated that she was waiting on her boyfriend, Steven Knuckles, who drove her to that area. According to reports, she told police that Knuckles met an unknown male to discuss about jobs and that he left in a truck. She also stated that she was unsure of when he would return and that she had no way of communicating with him. She claimed to have no knowledge of a male entering the amusement park.

Police said that she appeared nervous and that her story was inconsistent.

A camper with the back door open was located in the amusement park. Police observed 48-year-old Roland Roberts exiting the trailer’s side door.

Roberts was allegedly stealing from the camper. He stated that he was there for a couple hours to sleep and that “Robert Hubbard” gave him the permission to stay there. Police were able to track down the owner of the camper, Jack Vanwinkle, who stated that he didn’t give anyone permission to his camper.

According to a citation, loose change and a piece of mail belonging to Vanwinkle were discovered on Roberts.

Police ruled that Roberts remained unlawfully in Vanwinkle’s camper with the intention to commit a crime.

The female subject and Roland initially both stated that they were alone and did not know each other but before leaving the scene, reports state that Roland admitted that the female was his girlfriend.

He was lodged in the Madison County Detention Center with charges including theft by unlawful taking (under $500) and third-degree burglary.
