Now that summer is here, anyone planning to go on a long vacation should be prepared weeks ahead.
A driver’s license is an important piece of identification, but it will soon no longer be accepted for domestic air travels if it’s not Real ID compliant. A passport on the other hand, is a nationally recognized ID accepted in all states.
WBONtv spoke to Berea Post Office Sales Service Distribution Associate Jenny Gilliam, who told us that starting 2020, travelers will need to show a Real ID-compliant license or a passport for domestic travels.
Reports state that Oct. 1, 2020 is now considered the firm date for enforcement of Real ID at commercial airports in every states. If you do not have your Real ID by then, the TSA will require an additional or alternate form of ID (such as a passport). View all all acceptable forms of identification here. With this change, the need of passport has recently increased, said Gilliam.
According to Homeland Security webpage, Kentucky has an extension for REAL ID enforcement, allowing Federal facilities, including airports, to accept current driver’s licenses until August 1, 2019. After that, residents above 18 are required to get a new ID to access Federal facilities.
