The Fayette County Coroner has confirmed a fatality Wednesday evening near the Clays Ferry Bridge. Killed in a freak accident was 18-year-old Braxton Willoughby of Camargo.
Willougby had just graduated from Montgomery County High School this year and was a member of the football team.
Investigators say the boy was killed after being hit by a tire that came off a passing vehicle in the I-75 construction zone near the Clays Ferry Bridge. Willoughby was working with the construction company doing the interstate repairs during the summer. The tragedy occurred around 8 pm last night.
The teen was taken to UK Medical Center and pronounced dead about an hour after the accident occurred.
Traffic was impacted in both directions of the scene for some time as investigators worked the scene. Southbound traffic was not reopened until after 11 pm. Lexington Police are investigating the matter.
