Early Wednesday evening, Rockcastle County Sheriff Shannon Franklin said residents of Piney Branch Road and Livingston were being STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO EVACUATE, and to shelter at Rockcastle County Middle School.
A state of emergency was declared in the area because of the sulfur dioxide spilling from the wreckage.
Highway US 25 (South Wilderness Road) has been shut down 4 miles south and 4 miles north of Livingston. Only residents are permitted in, but they are encouraged to leave the vicinity.
This is near exit 49 of I-75, near the Rockcastle- Laurel line.
ORIGINAL STORY:
Emergency responders are on the scene of a train derailment in Rockcastle County between the areas of Mullins Station and Livingston. The derailment involves 13 cars on the CSX line. Sheriff Shannon Franklin tells WBON that several of the cars are confirmed to be leaking.
Railroad officials, law enforcement and emergency responders are on scene currently assessing the wreckage for any hazardous materials.
Cleanup crews from RJ Corman arrived on scene around 4:30 to begin cleanup operations that are expected to be in progress well into the holiday weekend.
The derailment is in a very rural, non-populated area of Rockcastle. The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon just before 3. No injuries have been reported, but 2 homes in that area have been evacuated out of caution according to authorities.
