10th planet Richmond rallied a small group to test the newest event to come to the area on July 13. Newbreed held their event at The Yard in Lexington.
The event was small and a few of the 10th planet competitors were unable to gain experience as no one else registered in their divisions. However, the team remained undeterred and was able to come away with 10 competitors earning 8 gold medals, 3 silver and 2 bronze.
Among the 10th planet athletes to shine was Paul Proctor. Proctor, a 43-year-old brown belt had not stepped on the competition mats in over 6 years. Proctor was able to leave the mats with a gold medal at the end of two tough matches.
Joey Lopes was able to earn double gold at the event in his gi and nogi divisions. Lopes will be traveling to Orlando with teammates
Vitoria Lopes and Natilee Wells to compete for a world title in just two weeks. While only a small amount of competitors attended from 10th Planet Richmond, the team still earned 3rd place out of 9 teams for youth and teens.
The team plans to return to action locally in September.
