The North American Grappling Association held their annual event in Cincinnati on July 26th. Fifty five teams gathered for the event from Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia, and Kentucky. The 10th Planet Richmond youth team was able to top the podium with 2370 points for 17 gold, 11 silver, and 4 bronze medals.
Competitors of the 10th Planet Richmond team were eager to attend the NAGA event due to the unique ruleset. Jordan Kinney, a freshman of Madison Central, took full advantage of the ruleset and finished a straight ankle lock against her opponent in two matches. This unique rule allowing leg locks for youth presented an opportunity to utilize skills practiced but rarely permitted to use in competition. Following Jordans lead, Natilee Wells, a sophomore of MCHS, also finished her opponent with the straight ankle lock.
Matthew Petrey, a student of LaFontaine Preparatory, had solid performances stepping into a heavier division with higher ranking opponents. He took one loss due to points in nogi for Bronze and took gold in the Gi division earning most improved athlete on the 10th planet richmond team.
The 10th Planet Richmond team also had 4 adult division competitors. 16 year old Vitoria Lopes did not have opponents for the Teen division. She stepped into the adult women division earning 1 gold and 2 silver medals.
The 10th planet affiliation earned overall team champions as 10th planet jiu jitsu teams from Berea, Columbus, Indianapolis, and Richmond all participated in the event.
