Beginning Monday, April 1, Goose Creek Road in eastern Lee County will be closed for replacement of a bridge crossing the CSX Transportation railroad line.
The bridge is located at the intersection of KY 52 and Goose Creek Road between Tallega and Athol. Construction on the new bridge may affect traffic on KY 52 at milepoint 23.228 at times.
Drivers can use KY 52 and KY 708 as an alternate route while Goose Creek Road is closed. No signed detour will be posted.
The new bridge is scheduled to be completed by Aug. 1. Until then, drivers will need to use the detour route.
The existing bridge has a sufficiency rating of 28.2 and is classified as structurally deficient. It has a posted weight limit of 3 tons. It was built in 1940 and is one of the last remaining wooden railroad bridges in the region. Approximately 65 vehicles use this bridge each day.
A contract was awarded in November for construction of the new bridge at a cost of $942,574.65.
