Multiple Fire Departments assist to contain wildfire near Mount Vernon


A new wildfire near Mount Vernon was quickly spreading around 5 pm Wednesday towards Mount Vernon. Area Fire crews were dispatched to a hillside on fire just off Highway 25 above the Christian Appalachian Project property.

Mount Vernon Fire Department say when they responded the fire was very large and quickly spreading. Assistance was requested from Brindle Ridge and Climax Fire Departments. The three departments worked together on scene for about 4 hours and completely contained and extinguished that fire that effected about 8-10 acres. No structures received damage and much property was saved due to the fast and effective work of the fire departments. No injuries were reported as result.

The Cut Gap fire is now estimated to encompass 2,000 acres. 25% contained. A couple of evacuations have been required so far. No injuries and no reports of homes damaged/destroyed at this time. Firefighters from as far as WV and UT are on sire to fight that fire.
