In the late hours of this past Saturday, officers of the Richmond Police Department reported being dispatched to a possible fight call at the Discount Tobacco on Killarney Lane.
When police arrived they reportedly learned that the situation had actually been a robbery, where three alleged subjects entered the store and began stealing vape materials. According to the citation, police also found out the incident shifted from a theft to a physical altercation when store employees confronted the subjects. One employee allegedly suffered an injury to their hand attempting to stop the fleeing criminals.
The next day police reportedly located the driver of the getaway vehicle, identified as 19-year-old Malachi Abney. Abney allegedly stated he went to the store to buy the other juvenile subjects alcohol but didn’t know the other two subjects were stealing from the tobacco store and only came to their defense when he saw them being targeted by store employees. Police further report that Abney returned to the scene to obtain a cellphone one of the subjects left behind.
Upon reportedly defending his friend in the process of committing a robbery and fleeing the scene after allegedly finding out his friend had stolen, Abney was lodged in the Madison County Detention Center on charges of Robbery 1st degree (Complicity), unlawful transaction with a minor and Tampering with Physical Evidence.
