Short pursuit in Richmond ends after crash, suspect in custody

Richmond Police Department units were involved in a vehicle pursuit that began Wednesday night around 10. Police Chief Rodney Richardson says the incident began when officers attempted to serve arrest warrants on the subject, 30-year-old Derick Damrell of Berea. The pursuit began around Walmart when the subject fled the scene at a high rate of speed, crashing into another vehicle as they entered the Eastern Bypass near the Walmart Fuel Center.

After a brief pursuit, the suspect’s vehicle, a white truck, was stopped in the Bypass medium in front of Burford’s Chevrolet. Thats where Damrell was taken into custody.  The suspect was transported to the hospital and later lodged in the Madison County Detention Center. No information on any of the other occupant’s conditions were released.

Both vehicles involved suffered heavy damage, and the incident resulted in a large police presence on the bypass for over an hour Wednesday night.

Damrell is facing a long list of charges including parole violation, possession of burglary tools, multiple wanton endangerment charges against officers, evading,  trafficking and other charges.
