Pan bowl Lake Dam in Breathitt possibly compromised, evacuations of those in flood plain ongoing

Tonight, more concerns stemming from the historic flooding in much of eastern Kentucky. State officials are now evacuating people from homes in the Panbowl Lake and Dam area in Breathitt County that are in the flood plain. As the northfork of the Kentucky River continues to rise officials apparently fear the structural integrity of the Panbowl dam and it’s ability to handle the strain of never before seen flood levels, or expect the waters will overrun the dam soon.

Officials with Kentucky’s Energy and Environment cabinet made the recommendation to evacuate more people from hundreds of homes in the area nearby the town of Jackson.

Highway 15, the major thoroughfare through Breathitt County is also closed due to the rising waters. Evacuations in the area are ongoing tonight. The flooding waters from the river are also threatening to come across HWY 15 and could dramatically increase the lake water level quickly. The evacuations are being done out of an abundance of caution.
