At approximately 9:20 this morning, the Berea Fire Department was called to a possible structure fire on Short Line Pike involving an explosion.
Upon arrival, crews determined there was no fire, instead, a reaction to an improper mixture of chemicals used to clean and prepare swimming pools.
Initially, Berea Fire and Berea Police personnel assisted in extrication of 2 occupants from the home. Those, plus 3 others that were inside the home at the time, were transported by Madison County EMS to local hospitals for further evaluation. Their condition is still unknown at this time.
After those patients were transported and the scene was secure, Madison County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and the Bluegrass Emergency Response Team (BERT) was activated. BERT includes the Lexington Fire Department, as well as many other agencies in the region and is designed to respond to a variety of large scale and/or specialized incidents. The Berea Fire Department, Lexington Fire Department, Madison County EMS, Madison County EMA are working together in the mitigation, cleanup, and disposal of those chemicals.
