The first winter storm for the greater Richmond has arrived, and although the snow has just started coming down, dozens of accidents have shuttered roadways all across the region. Local police, sheriff, fire and rescue personnel have all been inundated with calls, accidents, and road closings to deal with. Even with the best efforts of area road crews, the continuous pace of snowfall continues to win the battle. At press time, snow accumulations are registering one inch per hour.
I-75 has affected thousands of travelers with shutdowns of both lanes an mile markers 72, and another incident that closed an area of the interstate at mile marker 100. Old Richmond Road, and Lancaster Road, and US 25 also at a standstill due to multiple accidents.
Everyone is being urged to stay home and avoid travel. The winter storm warning continues for the area until 10 tonight, when we will hopefully get a reprieve from the snow.
