Earlier today, WBONTV had misstated in the story headline a charge this individual was facing regarding the alleged criminal abuse and strangulation of a child. WBONTV regrets this error. Here is the updated story:
A Richmond man was recently taken into custody and charged with 1st degree Criminal Abuse of a child under the age of 12 and 1st degree Strangulation by Richmond Police. According to the citation, police arrived to the area of Villa Drive in Richmond following the call of an unresponsive 2-year-old.
However, the child was already en route to UK hospital for treatment of severe head injuries, according to officials. Officers spoke with J Douglas (JD) Thomas, who was at the residence and told officers he was watching his girlfriend’s child as she took her other child to the doctor’s office.
Thomas continued, police say, stating that he was downstairs when he heard a loud noise from upstairs and found the toddler face down on the ground, seemingly falling off the bed. Thomas added that the child had cried, but then became unresponsive so he contacted authorities.
Detectives went to UK hospital and spoke with the mother and doctors, who reported that the toddler had brain bleed and a “midline shift” to the brain, which is when the brain is knocked off center. According to the citation, doctors said that there was bruising all over the child’s body, including those indicative of extensive sexual abuse and what they said was a possible STD.
Thomas was arrested and taken to the Madison County Detention Center.
