Preliminary hearing for dual murders ends in recusal of judge

The preliminary hearing for the man accused of the murders of two beloved Richmond residents, suspect Thomas Birl, occurred Wednesday morning in Madison County.

However, the hearing was a bit anticlimactic as all that was announced according to officials was the recusal of the judge presiding over the case.

Birl is charged with the deaths of Chris and Gracie Hager, who were shot and killed just over two weeks ago. The judge cited a conflict of interest as he recused himself off the case; saying that he, as many in the area, knew the Hagers. WBONTV will continue to update the court proceedings as they continue, with a new hearing set for the 19th of August at the request of Birl’s attorney.
