SIX COLONELS NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-ASUN FOOTBALL TEAM

ATLANTA, Ga. – Six Eastern Kentucky University football student-athletes were voted to the 2021 ASUN Preseason All-Conference Team, the league announced on Tuesday.

The six Colonels named Preseason All-ASUN were Jacquez Jones (wide receiver), Payton Collins (offensive line), Jyran Mitchell (all-purpose), Quinten Floyd (defensive line), Matthew Jackson (linebacker) and Joseph Sayles (defensive back).

EKU was picked to finish fifth in the Preseason ASUN/WAC AQ7 Coaches Poll. Defending national champion Sam Houston State is the preseason favorite after taking all seven first-place votes in the poll.

Jones played in all nine games last fall and led the Colonels with 40 receptions. He was second on the team with 578 receiving yards. He notably caught three touchdowns in the win at the Citadel on September 26. He posted a season-best 136 yards on six receptions in the win over No. 11 Central Arkansas on October 24. Jones closed out the season with five grabs, 100 yards and a touchdown in the Opportunity Bowl victory over Western Carolina on November 21.

Collins started all nine times at left tackle in 2020. The redshirt freshman from Columbus, Ohio helped EKU conclude the fall third in the nation in passing offense (247.4 yards per game) and fourth in the country in total offense (376.4 yards per game). Collins started on the offensive line when the Colonels ran up a season-high 590 yards of offense against Western Carolina in the 2020 Opportunity Bowl. He was part of an offensive unit that totaled 400 yards or more of offense in six of the final seven games of the season.

Mitchell is a transfer from Northern Illinois. The redshirt sophomore from Matteson, Illinois saw time at running back and wide receiver, and also contributed on kickoff return, kickoff and punt return teams during his time with the Huskies. Mitchell ran for 1,384 yards and 13 touchdowns and threw for 1,250 yards and 17 scores his senior year at Rich Central High School in the Chicago suburbs.

Floyd started six times at defensive tackle in 2020. The redshirt junior from Frankfort, Kentucky concluded the season with 20 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for a loss. He had one pass deflection and recovered one fumble. Floyd finished with a season-high five tackles in the wins over the Citadel (September 26) and Central Arkansas (November 14).

Jackson was named a 2020-21 Stats Perform FCS second team All-American following a season in which he led EKUwith 79 tackles, including 8.0 tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks.  The redshirt junior from Nashville had two fumble recoveries and two pass deflections.  He led the nation in the fall in fumbles recovered, ranked ninth in tackles per game (9.9) and was 15th in tackles for a loss per game (1.0). Jackson had 12 tackles at Marshall.  He totaled 11 tackles, including 3.0 for a loss and 1.0 sacks, and recovered a fumble in a win at The Citadel.  He posted a season-best 15 tackles and had two pass break-ups against Houston Baptist.  

Sayles played in all nine games and started six times at safety in 2020. The junior from Alpharetta, Georgia totaled 35 tackles, including one tackle for a loss. He had one interception and a total of six pass deflections during the fall. Sayles had a season-high nine tackles at Troy (October 17). He finished with three tackles and an interception in a win over No. 11 Central Arkansas (October 24).
