Last night at Madison Central both the girls and boys 44th district championships were on the line at Madison Central.
In the girls match, it was the number 1 seed Model facing off vs Madison Southern. After losing their only district came of the year to Madison Southern earlier in the year 2-1, Model was able to garner some revenge as they reversed the score in their favor to become district champions for the first time since 2009. The game was close throughout, tied at 1-1 through the end of the game and two overtimes but Model was able to outduel Southern in the shootout to bring home the trophy. Rebecca Otieno had 1 goal, and scored 2 points in the game while Goalie McKenna Tuttle allowed only 1 goal for Model and recorded 9 saves.
On the boys side, Madison Central entered last nights match vs Southern with an undefeated record, having outscored their opponents 58-8 on the season. But when they knocked off Madison Southern back on September 19th, it took overtime before the only goal of the game was scored in a Central 1-0 victory.
In the game last night, both teams were very aggressive and physical in the early stages and Southern was able to get on the board, on a Pierce Meeks penalty kick, just before the half and would keep Central scoreless for the 1-0 shutout victory. The win extends caps off the third consecutive district championship for head coach Andrew Lunsford and the Eagles soccer program. But after handing Central its first loss of the season, this one might be the sweetest one yet.
