A stretch of the Mountain Parkway roadway has been closed due to a significant depression which has developed in the westbound lanes near Slade Hill.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced on their social media page that they made the decision to close off the affected roadway after observing that a substantial sinkhole had developed beneath the pavement. This section is located near milepoint 35.8 in Powell County, west of the Wolfe County line.
Westbound traffic is currently being diverted at Exit 40 into Wolfe County onto northbound KY Highway 15. Motorists are able to re-enter the Mountain Parkway at Exit 33 in Slade.
The KYTC stated that their engineers and geotechnical specialists will continue to evaluate the damage and develop a long-term solution in order to safely reopen the highway.
