Lexington Man Charged with Manslaughter Following Fatal I-64 Crash

The Scott County Sheriff’s Office dispatched deputies to respond to a car accident that happened near the Scott and Fayette County lines on I-64 Eastbound Monday afternoon. While responding to the accident, a second vehicle accident occurred nearby within Scott County lines.

During the second accident, a car was forced to slow down with traffic as a result of the initial collision. At this time, a large box truck reportedly struck the vehicle at a high rate of speed, which authorities believe killed both the driver and passenger of the car upon impact.

The driver of the box truck, later identified as Evan Barnett, allegedly admitted to investigators that he had used controlled substances prior to operating the delivery vehicle and was distracted by a mobile phone at time of the crash.

Toxicology reports are pending.

Barnett was lodged in the Scott County Detention Center where he was charged with two counts of 2nd Degree Manslaughter.
