Our number two story brings us to Nick Mayo who became the Colonels all time leading scorer and arguably the greatest player in Eastern Kentucky history.
Mayo came to Richmond from Oakland Maine. He was named Gatorade Player of the year for Maine his senior season in which he averaged 24 points 14 rebounds 3 assists and 3 blocks a game. He was a finalist for Mr. Basketball as well.
As a freshman Mayo played in all 31 games for EKU and was named freshman of the year in the OVC and named 1st team All OVC. He averaged 15 points a game and snagged 5 rebounds and shot 61% from the floor. He ranked 4th in the league and 18th nationally in field goal percentage. As a sophomore he averaged 18.5 points a game and named 1st team All OVC. He is the second player to be named 1st team All OVC four straight seasons.
As a junior he once again earned 1st team All OVC honors becoming the first Colonel to ever achieve the honor. He averaged 18 points a game and became the 6th Colonel to have 1500 points and 500 rebounds in a career. His senior season saw him score 24 points a game and rank top 10 nationally. He once again earned 1st team All OVC honors.
In December of his senior season he passed Matt Witt to become the leading scorer for EKU with 2316 points. He finished his career ranked 4th all time on the OVC career list and is the 145th all time leading scorer in NCAA history.
After college Nick signed to play professionally in Japan in the B league which is the highest level in Japan.
