Eastern Kentucky welcomed in fellow Kentucky school Alice Lloyd College into Alumni Coliseum Tuesday night. This is the first ever meeting between the schools. Colonels coming off a tough loss at home Friday night against Western Kentucky 79-71, a game that saw Eastern trail by as many as 18 points and just come up short in the comeback. Jomaru Brown scored 41 points versus the Hilltopppers, a Colonel record for points at home for an EKU player, and was named OVC Co-Player of the week. The 41 points were the most by a Colonel in nearly 20 years. EKU ranks 6th in the country in steals averaging 13.0 a game and leads the Ohio Valley in free throw percentage at 78.6 and turnover margin at +6. Colonels sit at 2-2 on the season. Eastern’s two loses on the season are against top teams in the country, Kentucky and Western Kentucky.
On a cold wet night here in Richmond the Colonels stated slowly shooting 2-7 before the first media timeout but they held Alice Lloyd to 1-8 and a pair of turnovers. A pair of three pointers from Cameron Carmichael and Ty Taylor as well as dunk from Lachlan Anderson put the Colonels up 11 halfway through the half. Eastern finished the half shooting 38% and led 49-22. 9 different Colonels saw action with Anderson leading the scoring at 10 points. Freshman Michael Moreno came in and knocked down a pair of quick three pointers and had 9 points at the break. Perhaps the most impressive stat of the first half, Colonels had 14 assists on 16 made baskets. They forced Alice Lloyd into 12 turnovers and held the Eagles to 7-38 shooting the ball including 1-10 from behind the arc.
EKU played everyone available in the game and won going away 99-63. Several Colonels set or nearly set new individual career highs in scoring. Cameron Carmichael did set a new career high for himself scoring 12 points, besting his old career best by two. Tre King sets a new personal best scoring 15 points, Russha Cruickshank just misses a new best by a point scoring 14, and Ty Taylor with 18 points just two off his career best. Michael Moreno ties his best scoring effort with 14 points. In all the Colonels had 7 players score in double figures. Darius Hicks with a double double 10 points and 11 rebounds, Lachlan Anderson with another solid effort scoring 16 and grabbing 8 rebounds.
Colonels shoot 44% for the game while knocking down 15 three pointers and holding Alice Lloyd to 21-74 from the floor. EKU forced 19 turnovers and and only commit 9, they end the night with 27 assists on 35 baskets.
Eastern won’t be back home until December 21st when they welcome Charleston Southern in. The next game is November 22nd versus Florida International.
