The Lady Colonels began their season Wednesday night at home against state rival Northern Kentucky University. The game is Samantha Williams Colonel coaching debut as the team did not play an exhibition this season. The last time these two teams met on the hardwood was back in 1982/83 season. EKU enters the game on an 18 game losing streak and the last time they won a game against a division one opponent was February 10 2018.
Colonels have a lot of new faces on the roster, only six players return from last seasons roster. Bria Bass and Shay Solomon lead he returnees. Solomon averaged 10.5 points a game last season while Bass scored 9.9 a game. A lot of hype surrounds I’Liyah Green a transfer from Cincinnati who was declared eligible immediately.
The Colonels start the game off with some great swarming defense in the opening quarter forcing Northern KY into 6 turnovers and held them to 5 of 15 shooting. Green made her presence felt early scoring 5 points. Colonels knock down 3 three pointers and control the paint in the opening quarter. The second quarter started with Northern scoring the first seven points before newcomer Samari Mowbray knocked down a three to break the run. Northern got close a few times trimming the lead to 1 point late but a three pointer from senior Catie Kaifes extended the lead to 4 but a three at the buzzer from Molly Glick pulled the Norse back within a point at halftime 37-36. Lady Colonels led the entire half aside from a 3-2 deficit 30 seconds into the game. Green with 7 points and 5 rebounds to lead the Colonels at the break.
Northern opens the second half scoring the first 4 points and taking a 40-37 before Coach Williams takes a timeout to talk with her team. Back and forth action through the third period sees EKU tie the game after 4 quick points from Jordan and Mowbray but the visitors with a basket with seconds on the clock lead 52-50. Davis with a three pointer to start the final quarter out EKU on top by one at 53-52. With just over four minutes left and the shot clock running out Shay Solomon banks in a three to put EKU up 60-59. Hard fought game but the Colonels snap an 18 game losing streak and are 1-0 under Samantha Williams! Solid victory over a strong Northern Kentucky team.
Shay Solomon leads the way in scoring with 12 points and 5 assists. Bria Bass with 8 points, Anysa Jordan with 8 points and 7 rebounds, Samari Mowbray with 7 points, Green with 7 points and 10 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots. Davis with 7 points 3 steals and 3 assists. Catie Kaifes with 6, Qay Stanton adds 7 points and 3 assists, Terri Goodlett with 6.
